CECILIE LUND
MENNESKEVÆSEN
When I began preparing for this exhibition, I read Danish folktales and the creatures that were particularly believed in by the common folk. Legends have always fascinated me, so I had an idea that the exhibition should revolve around this theme. I started comparing traits and similarities in the different stories, as well as exploring why and how these tales were created. I quickly noticed one common thread: Fear.
The fear of the unknown, of what we do not understand, and the fear of what might happen if we do not act with caution. Especially because these stories originate from a time without electricity and without the collective sharing of knowledge that we have today, it is not surprising that people back then imagined that shadows, for example, could be elves or that a newborn might have been swapped with a changeling if it suddenly changed behavior.
Therefore, this exhibition is about humans as beings who act in different ways, with fear as the common denominator.
